My new skincare/makeup addiction is to BB cream (short for blemish balm). I admit that I’m a little slow to the trend as it has been popular in Asia since 2005. BB cream was initially used by dermatologists to help laser surgery patients protect, soothe and regenerate their highly sensitive skin while also providing good coverage for post-laser scars and redness. It has since been produced by Korean cosmetic companies for the general market consumption.
Referred to as the secret of Korean celebrities for their always flawless skin, the benefits of BB cream may include (depending on the brand and formula):
- a natural no makeup look
- lighter and more moisturizing than foundation
- coverage for blemishes, pigmentation and pores
- SPF protection
- skin refining and smoothing
Note that each BB cream may contain different properties and that there are different lines for different target age ranges.
In Toronto, other than online shopping, the only place one would be able to find BB creams would be at Asian cosmetic stores. However, imagine my surprise last Spring when I got an email from Sephora saying that it now carries BB creams! I personally haven’t tried any of the general Western-branded BB creams (excluding Dr. Jart), but I wonder if they are any good. Thoughts anyone?
