Shiseido Anessa Sunscreen

We all know that to protect ourselves from skin cancer and aging, protection and prevention against the effects of the sun are key, and to apply sunscreen prior to exposure.

I wasn’t a particularly big fan of sunscreen growing up, especially the greasy feeling that comes after application.  I’ve experimented with a most of the of drugstore sunscreen and sunblock brands including Aveeno, Coopertone, Neutrogena, Banana Boat, Vichy and Ombrelle and various markets including normal use, sport, children as well as ones that specifically target the face.  However, I found I was still unsatisfied with what I could find.  In particular, I had a really hard time finding a good sunscreen for the face – the formulas  were still too thick and oily (even though it was labelled oil-free).

Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen

My friend recommended I try Anessa, a sunscreen line by Shiseido available only in Asia.  I finally got the chance to buy the Anessa perfect UV sunscreen with SPF50+ while in Japan last summer, and I can honestly say that it was the best sunscreen purchase of my life.

My before and after sunscreen application.

The sunscreen itself is white, but when it is rubbed into the skin it becomes transparent and blends quite nicely.  The after effect is not greasy, sticky nor shiny, but moisturized and matte!  For the girls, this is perfect for application prior to or after makeup.  The high SPF is a plus, and what makes this product even better is that it is water and sweat resistant.  It’s interesting to note that there was no expiry on the bottle as compared to North American sunscreens, which usually expire a year or two after purchase, I’d asked the sales lady the expiry.  She said 3 years!  I was so impressed I immediately stocked up and purchased 2 bottles.  There are a few versions including for sensitive skin and sports use, but I got the normal everyday one.

The downside is that it’s not cheap, easily costing $40 for only 60 ml from online retailers that ship to North America, including Sasa (a Hong Kong based chain store specializing in cosmetics).

In my opinion, its pros far outweigh the cons.  It is so hard to find a good non greasy formula and this is easily one of the best sunscreens out in the market right now.  I’ve also tried Shiseido’s Ultra Sun Protection Lotion, but although they are of the same brand, I prefer Anessa due to its lighter formula.
